Bones Bearings

Bones Skateboard Bearings set the standard by which all other bearings are measured. In 1991, George A. Powell began Bones Bearings after having left Powell Peralta. Early on, Powell saw the need for fast bearings and began searching for the fastest bearings at an affordable price. Powell went to Switzerland, where bearings were being made to roll faster then he had ever seen. He worked with Swiss manufacturers to optimize the bearing. He switched from standard, stamped-metal ball retainers to the high-speed, precision-molded plastic; designing them to be easily removable with one shield off, adjusted tolerances and clearances, combined side and vertical loads, and replaced the typical lubricant with his own Bones Skateboard Bearings Speed Cream. All of this combines to create the Bones Skateboard Bearings that we know now. In 2008, Bones Skateboard Bearings proudly celebrated 25 years of business. Powell also owns Bones Wheels. Skate One, a company that's been around since 1976, currently distributes Bones Bearings.

Bones Wheels

In 1974 George A. Powell started a skateboard manufacturing business in Santa Barbara, California, which included Bones Skateboard Wheels. George Powell had studied engineering at Stanford University, so it didn't take much for him to realize urethane was the answer to making skateboard wheels better. Eventually laid off from his job in the aerospace industry, Powell started to make his own wheels by baking them and buying urethane. The name Bones Skateboard Wheels came to him because of the white color of the wheels he was making. And from 1977 till today, Bones Skateboard Wheels roll. As early as 1977, Ray Rodriguez rode for Bones Wheels. Powell worked with Powell Peralta Skateboards from 1978 to 1991 and continues today to make skateboard products such as Bones Bearings and Bones Wheels. Distributed by Skate One.

Chocolate

Chocolate Skateboards was founded in 1994 by Rick Howard, Spike Jonze, Mike Carroll and Megan Baltimore and they built it on an interesting idea, instead of adding more riders to Girl Skateboards, why not create a new team and a new company? The 1994 original riders included Chico Brenes, Daniel Castillo, Paulo Diaz, Richard Mudder, Shamile Randle, Gabriel Rodriguez and Ben Sanchez. While Chocolate Skateboards and Girl Skateboards are separate companies, they appear together in videos such as Yeah, Right!, share boards and go on tours together. Chocolate Skateboards is distributed by Girl Distribution along with Girl Skateboards, Royal Skateboard Trucks, and Fourstar Clothing. Girl Skateboards Distribution began in August of 1993, only shortly before Chocolate Skateboards.

Creature

In the early 90s, Russ Pope began Creature Skateboards. Today, Darren Navarrette runs Creature Skateboards out of NHS Distribution, resurrecting it in 2008 after it had gone under in the 90s. Creature Skateboards was created with the backing of NHS, when some riders for SMA were interested in starting something new and got on board with Pope and Creature. During the early years of Creature, guys like Barker Barrett, Jason Adams, Dorian Tucker, Darren Navarette, Ronnie Marshall, Novak, and Crazy Eddy rode. Navarette snuck into a tradeshow for three days in California many years ago, where he met Russ Pope, was invited to ride for Creature and SMA, and did. When Creature folded, Navarette went off to 151 only to eventually go back to revive Creature Skateboards, where it was all about hesh law and survival. It worked. Still does.

Etnies

Established in 1986 by Pierre Andre Senizergues, Etnies Skateboarding is owned and distributed by Sole Technologies, which Senizergues also owns. Etnies Skateboarding Footwear was the first skateboarder-owned and -operated global action sports company. Since its creation in 1986, Etnies Skateboarding has been the leader in the technological advances of skate shoes, forever changing the face of footwear. Pierre Andre Senizergues was a professional freestyle skateboarder of the 1980s and grew up skating in the suburbs of Paris. Eventually Senizergues would develop back problems and stop skating, but he wanted to remain working in the skateboard industry. The household names of Etnies, Emerica, and Es Shoes all exist under the roof of Sole Technology and all come out of Senizergues's vision. Senizergues formed the idea for progressive skate shoes in Europe, bringing it to the U.S. through California, the skateboarding mecca. At first, Etnies didn't take. He stuck it out and, after borrowing massive amounts of money and diving into steep amounts of debt, Etnies exploded in the U.S. in 1994. Senizergues started designing shoes for a new generation of skaters in a lo-cut design. High tops were largely what were available at the time, but skaters were looking to move in a new direction. He saw the lo-top as the up-and-coming design. The name Etnies Footwear came from Senizergues's history of skating in France.

Flip

Flip Skateboards is a U.S.-based, international skateboard company created by Jeremy Fox, Ian Deacon, and Geoff Rowley in 1994. Flip Skateboards was originally created in the early 1990s in England as a sister company to Death Box Skateboards and was also the successor to Bash Skateboards. Flip's very first skate team included Christian Heitmann, who was also their very first pro; Elton Whybrow; Chris Weinekker; Ivan Jenson; and Luke McKirdy. Geoff Rowley was born in Liverpool, England, and began skateboarding at the age of 12. His first sponsor in 1994 was Death Box Skateboards. Ian Deacon, born in England, moved to the US in 1994. He began his skateboarding career in 1980 in a town called Brighton. Brighton is known as Pig City, a slight on the infamous Dog Town in California. Many notable skaters came out of Brighton, including Mark Baker, Simon Levene, Steve Kellner, Don Brown, and Justin Ashby. It was during 1989 that Deacon and Jermey Fox began Bash Skateboards, a division of a company Fox had already created called Death Box. Bash would eventually turn into Flip, and, in 1993, Death Box and Flip Skateboards merged. In 1994, the guys moved Flip Skateboards to the states. Flip has gone on to become one of the biggest and most well-known skateboard companies worldwide. Over the years, notable team members with Flip have included Bob Burnquist, Tom Penny, Rune Glifberg, Lance Mountain, Ali Boulala, Luan de Oliveira, David Gonzalez, Andrew Langi, and Arto Saari.

He was first sponsored by Gullwing Trucks and Sims Skateboards and ended up working with TWS as a staff photographer and writer. Swank finished with TWS in 1989 while he was riding for Canada's Skull Skates. Swank worked with Steve Rocco at World Industries for two years building up and trying to establish Foundation Skateboards, which was rough but worked. Today, Todd Swank is the founder of TumYeto, which he started in 1989, the company accredited with creating the motto, "By Skateboarders, For Skateboarders". He is still the owner, photographer and publisher at Foundation Skateboards. Swank was the first Senior Photographer at Transworld Skateboarding Magazine. Mob

Mob griptape was born from necessity. Applying griptape to a fresh new board is not exaclty the easiest. In fact, it might be the most difficult component to add to your skateboard. Avoiding bubbles when applying this sticky tape has frustrated skateboarders all over the world. Solution? Mob Griptape. The most simple innovation to add into their manufacturing process was perforation. Small holes to allow those air pockets to breath out and take the headache (and finger pain, too!) out of gripping that new deck you've been wanting. It's just a no brainer if you're looking to get your grip game on.

Slappy

"All throughout the pandemic, when the world stopped, and things were locked down, I started messing with my trucks. I decided to start working on designs, and the sampling process began shortly after. I went through so many different versions of the hangers and baseplates, experimenting with different bushings, bushing heights, hardnesses, turning radius, kingpins, polishes, and the list goes on for over two years. I finally got the truck to where I really like it. The main thing I wanted in a truck was to have the best grind clearance I could get without messing up the turn I wanted. I also wanted the truck to be strong, light, and have a classic look and feel. At the end of all this, it is just me in my garage trying to create something new with Slappy trucks." -Mike Sinclair
